MeetYourBand.com is a fairly new social networking site for musicians that seems to be catching on. The concept is that same as MySpace and Friendster, in that you get a profile and you can build a favorite list of other’s profiles, but it’s specifically for musicians and bands. In fact, there are two types of profiles as they explain:

There are two profile account types. One is a personal profile, which is for any individual musician (whether or not you’re in a band), DJs, MCs, solo artists, and music tutors or students looking for music tutors. The other profile is for your band. Use this profile to show off your band, display your music & videos and get some gigs!

MeetYourBand is a free site and has many features such as a classified section, a forum, video and audio uploading and the ability to message other members. It also promises features that are “coming soon” which will somehow help musicians get gigs, though it’s not clear what these features are and how they will help you play shows.

At the time this post was written, the member numbers were fairly high for a new site and the state to state member number seem to match each state’s population demographics. For instance, Alaska has two members, while New York has 163 and California has 303 compared to

Colorado’s 65. These numbers, while modest, are pretty impressive when you consider that the site just launched and focuses on the specific niche of musicians. Judging by the activity on the site you can expect the number of members to grow as people learn of its existence, so it’s worth checking out.

If you already have a band or are looking for one a site like this may come in handy. As a general rule, if you aren’t playing, you aren’t promoting your music as well as you could be. Being involved in a site like this can keep you from losing too much time if you find your band one member short or find yourself out of your own band.

Don’t let the current number of members fool you either; when I got on MySpace only two of my friends had accounts (I checked), now I’m friends with half my highschool graduation class. Be patient, Grasshopper.
